Go ahead and feel free to want to look your best. Having a great desire to get rid of that fat and look good is a great motivator for weight loss. No, you're not vain or overly proud for wanting to look good.

Look at yourself in the mirror and say, "Hey you, I want to look trim and fit and I am going to do something about it!" And occasionally think about how wonderful it will be to be at your proper weight and looking good.

That's a good thing, but let me give you a word caution...do not seek to get skinny like some of these strange looking fashion models. Skinny is not healthy and skinny does not look good to anyone unless they cross their eyes. Well, I guess some people think skinny looks good, but I sure don't.

A little meat on the bones looks good and adds to your figure so don't go overboard ladies.

And of most importance, don't ruin your happiness by worrying about your weight. Just think thin and do what it takes to get there.

Losing weight is a difficult thing to achieve especially if like me, you like your food. My advice to concentrate on 3 key factors: diet, exercise and drinking water. It might seem obvious but these three things WILL make you lose weight. Fad diets DON'T work; you end up piling on any lost weight very quickly which lowers your self-esteem making you eat more!

The only way to lose weight is to do it gradually and healthily over a period of time. You also need to tailor your diet and exercise to your personal regime. If you weigh 13 stone, exercise and eat fairly healthily but aren't losing weight then this could be caused by: a.) Eating too much bad food b.) Not exercising enough.

If this is the case, identify the problem and fix it. Just because you go to the gym twice a week for an hour each time doesn't mean you can eat whatever you like for the rest of the week. Up your exercise to three or four times a week and cut down on the sugary and salty foods and you'll very quickly see a difference. Any movement helps so try walking to work, swimming, running, and the gym or dance/fitness classes. Combine this with 8 pints of water a day and you'll not only look better but you'll feel much better too. But we sometimes eat when we don't get the hungry sign from our body. Why is this? Look at the following reasons below of why we eat when we are not hungry, and tick the ones that apply to you. Look at the reasons why you eat when you are not hungry.

Understanding why and when you eat is half the battle in reducing your non-hungry eating.

- If it is an emotion that you are trying to push back down or block it out with food (e.g. sadness, anger etc), will food stop this emotion coming back again? Unfortunately the answer is no. Emotions are valuable warning signals from the body that something needs attention now, or that some past event or issue needs to be resolved. If we suppress these emotions with food, the emotions will only keep coming back until we eventually resolve them.

- If it is a habit, once you have identified it, it is usually easy to change, avoid or substitute the food with something equally as satisfying as food. E.g. If you always eat a biscuit whilst having a cup of tea, either give up drinking tea for a while, or substitute the biscuit for a new association such as a chat.

- If it is to please people, just politely explain that you are trying to lose weight by only eating when you are hungry. Mention how delicious the food looks and maybe you will have some later when you are hungry. Stick to your guns!

- If it is a special occasion, e.g. Christmas, birthday, holiday etc, think does this have to involve eating everything in sight? Will that make me happy? Or will I be content to try little bits of everything I like and that will make me feel satisfied until I am full? In this way you do not miss out on anything, and you do not have to waddle home because you are so full!
